In February 2022, Cyclone Batsirai tore across Madagascar and right through our work zone and was followed, just two weeks later, by Cyclone Emnati. The devastation was enormous, 140 people died in collapsed buildings, landslides or they were washed away in unprecedented floods. Over 100,000 were left homeless, the water polluted, and worst of all, the annual harvest that people desperately depend on was gone.
Thanks to the incredible response of our donors we were immediately able to reach many of the most desperate with emergency kits and support. For the last year, we have been rebuilding infrastructure including schools, bridges and health centres and helping people get crops back in the ground to reduce the pressure on the forest. One year on, many lives are back on track. However, there is still much to be done and many more people to be reached. There is famine, reports of people selling babies in order to survive and, again this year, two more cyclones set back some of the progress made. We need to carry on rebuilding cyclone-proof schools and health centres and help people with resilient agriculture techniques, fast-growing crops and tree planting. Please help us make this happen. |
